When the theater she grew up in is sold out from under her, Theda MacMillian, a suffragist and struggling playwright must fend for herself. But jobs are scarce and she becomes a typist at the San Franciscan. Aching to write, Theda goes undercover and begins submitting articles under an assumed name.
Noticing a similarity in the errors the mysterious reporter makes and Theda’s typing errors, Augustus Thorn, the newspaper’s editor, grows suspicious. Not believing Theda could be the mystery writer, he investigate and discovers a smart, dedicated, intensely passionate woman. Augustus becomes captivated.
But Augustus is married, though unhappily. Theda’s passion unlocks his own and he begins writing poetry while being careful to keep her at arms length.
Then Theda uncovers a corrupt polician’s payoff. Wanting to get irrefutable evidence to prove her story, Theda waits. Aware of Theda’s peril, and worried over her safety, Augustus begins to follow her. One night he loses the log of poetry.
Theda finds the poetry and recognizes the handwriting as Augustus’s before realizing the poems are written about her. Overwhelmed by his words, Theda begins to view herself, Augustus and the world differently.
With their love forbidden, Theda and Augustus struggle to control their feelings until their desire threatens to ruin them both.
