When Sadie Weber, a San Franciscan whose family runs in the high society circles, votes illegally and is arrested, her father decides he’s had enough of her antics. To “cure” her, he sends her to live with the Duncan’s, long-time friends of the family, who live in the small town of Defiance, OR. At the Duncan’s she meets Buster Dunn, the opinionated proprietor of a logging company who is at odds with his peers by supporting the unions.
For the first time in her life, Sadie truly respects a man. Even though Buster disagrees with Sadie’s suffrage viewpoints, his strength and determination motivates her. Soon she moves out, opens a Nickelodeon and a starts a suffrage group. The locals don’t appreciate Sadie’s efforts however, and the theater is burned down and she is threatened with murder.
Even though he’s got troubles of his own, Buster admires Sadie and keeps an eye on her. Together they battle the status quo and in the process fall in love. With both their lives hanging in the balance, Sadie and Buster must decide how for they will go to stand up for their beliefs and whether their love is worth risking it all.
